Port Charlottetown Ends Cruise Season on High Note, Announces Record-Breaking 2024 Cruise Season

Charlottetown, PE* – Port Charlottetown is proud to announce the successful conclusion of a record-breaking 2024 cruise season, establishing new milestones for Prince Edward Island’s cruise industry. This year, the port welcomed an unprecedented 94 ships and over 220,000 visitors, a 20% increase over the previous benchmark year of 2019, solidifying PEI’s reputation as a premier cruise destination. The record-setting season also reflects the cruise sector’s full recovery and growth beyond pre-pandemic levels, signaling an exciting future for tourism on the Island.

“We are thrilled to see the cruise industry flourish in PEI, and this season has been nothing short of remarkable,” said Mike Cochrane, CEO of Port Charlottetown. “With record-breaking ship calls and visitor numbers, we’re proud to have played a key role in extending PEI’s tourism season from late April through early November. It’s a testament to our Island’s appeal and the warm welcome extended by our local community.”

The Honourable Zack Bell, Minister of Fisheries, Tourism, Sport and Culture, emphasized the economic significance of the season. “The cruise industry continues to be a vital contributor to PEI’s economy, driving tourism growth and showcasing our Island as a top destination for global travelers,” said Minister Bell. “Tourism is essential to our province’s economic vitality, and the direct economic impact of this year’s cruise visitation has been substantial. The cruise sector has truly been a champion for the 2024 tourism season.”

As Port Charlottetown looks back on this milestone year, it is also preparing for another successful season ahead. “Our commitment to showcasing Prince Edward Island to the global cruise audience remains strong,” Cochrane said. “The continued growth in cruise visitation affirms PEI’s status as a sought-after destination. We are dedicated to providing an exceptional guest experience that encourages visitors to return and explore even more of what the Island has to offer.”

In 2024, Port Charlottetown collaborated with local business associations and cultural organizations to promote the unique offerings of PEI. Visitors enjoyed vibrant live performances, local artisan markets, and culinary experiences that highlighted the best of Canada’s Food Island. The port’s partnerships with local aquaculture and tourism associations helped elevate PEI’s presence on the global stage, delivering a memorable experience that connects travelers to the Island’s culture and community.
